Breeds

While each breed shares many of the same distinctive characteristics, every dog is different with a unique personality and appearance.

All Svalinn canines are bred in-house from known and quantified bloodlines that we can trace back over 80 years. We breed, raise and train three superior breeds to become our protection dogs: German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds and Belgian Malinois.

Although every one of our dogs is an elite athlete, we do not enter our dogs in kennel shows or protective sports competitions. Our dogs are bred and trained specifically to mitigate real world threats and to provide you and your family with peace of mind. Instead of chasing ribbons and trophies, we focus our efforts on training your next family member and ultimate protector.

The following breed descriptions are our own impressions from many years of experience. However just like you, dogs are individuals.

German Shepherd

THE GERMAN SHEPHERD IS AN ICONIC ANIMAL WITH A STORIED HISTORY OF COMPANIONSHIP, WORKING, SAVING, PROTECTING AND DETECTING.

The German Shepherd is a relatively new breed, originating in Germany in the 1890s. German Shepherds are an ideal choice for families with young children. The dogs are highly social, very loving and eager to please. A German Shepherd performs particularly well in families with multiple handlers. Because of their high intelligence and gentle demeanor, German Shepherds are recognized as one of the world’s best working dogs.

Characteristics:

Gentle, intelligent, even-tempered, agile, athletic and well muscled.

Appearance:

Strong color marking including combinations of tan/black, red/black and blond. Most color varieties include black masks and body markings.

German Shepherd

THE DUTCH SHEPHERD OR “DUTCHIE” IS A MEDIUM-SIZED DOG THAT LOVES TO WORK.

The Dutch Shepherd is also a very good choice for families with children, inherently protective of its family members. Dutchies possess a great sense of humor and are always eager to please their owners. The females are generally more outgoing and social than the male dogs. The dogs are less sensitive than German Shepherds. Dutch Shepherds vary in size and stature depending on individual bloodlines within the breed. Svalinn raises and trains a number of different sizes to fit almost any lifestyle from open ranches to living on a sailboat. Dutchies are always alert, extremely watchful and exceptionally reliable.

Characteristics:

Affectionate, alert, obedient, loyal, highly intuitive and reliable

Appearance:

A brindle, tiger stripe-like pattern distinguishes the dutch shepherd. Colorings can vary from golden and light sand, to chestnut red, all the way to silver and black.

Dutch Shepherd

BELGIAN MALINOIS ARE HIGHLY INTELLIGENT AND QUICKLY BOND WITH THEIR HANDLER.

Energetic medium-sized dogs, Malinois instinctively want to go everywhere and do everything with their owner. Most Belgian Malinois are better suited for pure working environments or living with a strong single handler. That said, Svalinn’s founder owns a highly-trained Belgian Malinois that accompanies him everywhere and has assimilated completely into his family with young children. Malinois relish a challenge and look forward to taking on new tasks.

Characteristics:

Active, alert, confident, protective, watchful and high desire to please.

Appearance:

Short fawn to mahogany and tan coats, with black mask and markings.
